Enter a HEX or RGB color value and this tool finds the closest match among the 148 standard CSS color names. Even when there's no exact match, it uses perceptual color distance (redmean) to show the three closest candidates, which is handy when deciding what to call a color.

How to use

  1. Pick a color with the color box, or enter a HEX (#4A90D9) or RGB (rgb(74,144,217) or 74,144,217) value.
  2. The closest CSS color name and three near matches are shown alongside color swatches.
  3. See 'Exact match' when the value matches exactly, or 'Closest match' with the margin of error otherwise.
  4. Use the 'Copy Name' button to copy your chosen color name to the clipboard.

FAQ

How is the 'closest color' determined?
Instead of plain RGB distance, we use the redmean color-distance formula, which reflects the sensitivity of the human eye. It's calculated so that names which actually look similar in brightness and hue are matched first.
Why are there only 148 names?
There are 148 standard colors officially named by browsers and CSS (aliceblue through yellowgreen). We find the closest name within this standard list, and you can use the accompanying HEX value for the exact color.
Is the color value I enter sent to a server?
No. Both the color list and the distance calculation are built into the browser, so your input is processed only on your device and is never transmitted to or stored on a server.
