File Hash (Checksum) Generator

Compute SHA-256/512 checksums of files or text right in your browser to verify integrity

🔒 Everything runs 100% in your browser. Your files and input are never uploaded to any server.

This tool instantly computes SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, and SHA-1 hashes of any file or text using your browser's Web Crypto API. Compare a downloaded file against the checksum provided by its source to detect tampering, or fingerprint text—all without ever uploading your file anywhere.

How to use

  1. Choose the 'File' or 'Text' tab.
  2. Select a hash algorithm (SHA-256, etc.).
  3. Drag and drop a file or type in text, and the hexadecimal checksum is calculated instantly.
  4. Paste the source's expected value into the 'Compare with expected value' box to confirm a match.

FAQ

What does a checksum tell me?
Identical content always produces the same hash, while even a single differing byte produces a completely different one. If a downloaded file's hash matches the official checksum, you can trust that it wasn't corrupted or altered during transfer.
Should I use SHA-1 since it's offered?
SHA-1 has known collision attacks and is not recommended for security verification. For integrity or security purposes, use SHA-256 or higher; treat SHA-1 only as a reference for compatibility with legacy systems.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read as an ArrayBuffer in your browser and hashed with Web Crypto (crypto.subtle.digest), so its contents are never sent to or stored on any server. Large files may take a moment to process depending on your device's performance.
