FAQ

When a wave enters a new medium, does frequency or wavelength change?
Frequency (f) stays the same — it's set by the source. What changes is the wave speed (c), and wavelength (λ) scales right along with it. That's why light bends and slows in glass but keeps its color.
What values does the calculator use for the speed of light and the speed of sound?
The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 m/s. The speed of sound is taken as roughly 343 m/s, the standard figure for dry air at 20°C (68°F).
When should I use the 'custom speed' option?
Use it whenever a wave travels through something other than a vacuum (for light) or room-temperature air (for sound) — light passing through water or glass, or sound moving through a different medium. Just enter that medium's actual propagation speed and the calculator uses it instead of the built-in defaults.
