- What is Mach measured against?
- Mach is a ratio based on the speed of sound. This calculator uses 343 m/s (about 767.3 mph, or 1,234.8 km/h) — the speed of sound in dry air at 20°C (68°F) — as Mach 1.
- Where are knots normally used?
- Knots are the standard speed unit in shipping and aviation. One knot equals one nautical mile (1,852 m) per hour, which works out to roughly 1.15 mph or 1.852 km/h.
- Does the actual speed (km/h) that equals Mach 1 change at higher altitudes?
- Yes. The speed of sound depends on air temperature, so as you climb to higher, colder altitudes (like the stratosphere), the speed of sound itself slows down — meaning the real speed that equals Mach 1 drops below the sea-level figure. For simplicity, this calculator uses a fixed speed of sound (343 m/s), based on sea level at 20°C.
