Shuffle a list of names at random and split them fairly into evenly sized teams

🔒 Everything runs 100% in your browser. Your files and input are never uploaded to any server.

Paste names one per line (or comma-separated), set the number of teams or the members per team, and this tool shuffles the roster with cryptographic randomness and distributes them evenly so team sizes differ by at most one. Whenever you need to divide people fairly — PE class groups, dinner teams, project groups, game teams — you get instant results without the hassle of drawing by hand.

How to use

  1. Enter your list of names in the roster box, one per line or comma-separated.
  2. Choose your basis: 'Split by number of teams' or 'Split by members per team'.
  3. Enter the desired number of teams (or members per team) as a number.
  4. Press the 'Split teams' button, and if needed grab the roster with 'Copy result'.

FAQ

Is it really split randomly and fairly?
Yes. It performs a Fisher-Yates shuffle with the browser's cryptographic randomness (crypto.getRandomValues), then assigns people to each team in turn, one by one. The shuffle is unbiased, and team sizes never differ by more than one person.
What happens if the number of people doesn't divide evenly by the number of teams?
The leftover people are assigned one extra to the earlier teams first. For example, splitting 10 people into 3 teams distributes them as 4, 3, and 3 to keep them as even as possible.
Are the names I enter sent to a server?
No. Entering the roster, shuffling, assigning, and copying all happen only within your browser, and no data is ever sent to or stored on a server. Results are drawn fresh each time, so use them as a reference.
