- Which cup and fluid ounce standard does this use?
- US customary units. One fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL, and one cup is 8 fluid ounces, or roughly 236.59 mL.
- Do recipes from other countries use the same 236 mL cup?
- No, and this trips people up constantly. Korean and Japanese recipes use a 200 mL cup, while the metric cup used across Europe, Australia, and the UK is 250 mL. The chart at the bottom of this page converts all three cup standards side by side.
- Can I use this to convert straight between volume and mass, like liters of water to kilograms?
- No, this tool only converts between volume units (L, mL, gal, and so on) — it doesn't handle mass. As a reference point, pure water at 4°C has a density of 1, so 1 mL happens to equal 1 g, but liquids like milk or oil have different densities, so the same volume won't weigh the same amount.
