FAQ
- Why does my 100 Mbps internet only download at about 12 MB/s?
- Network speeds are quoted in bits (Mbps), while file sizes are measured in bytes (MB). Since one byte is eight bits, you divide the Mbps figure by 8 to get the megabytes per second you'll actually see in your download manager.
- How fast is gigabit internet?
- 1 Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps, which converts to a theoretical maximum of 125 MB per second — though real-world speeds run lower because of protocol overhead and network conditions.
- Why does the actual download take longer than the time this calculator predicts?
- This calculator assumes you're getting 100% of your connection's theoretical maximum bandwidth. In reality, protocol overhead, other users sharing the same server or line, Wi-Fi signal loss, and congestion on your ISP's network all chip away at that ceiling, so real-world download speeds almost always come in below the theoretical number.
