With just your neck and waist (and hips for women) circumference measured by tape, it estimates your body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy formula; if measuring is hard, you can calculate quickly from height, weight, and age. It's handy for checking your rough body fat level and rating when you don't have a body-composition analyzer.

How to use

  1. Select the 'U.S. Navy method' or 'BMI method' tab and your sex.
  2. For the U.S. Navy method, enter your height, neck, and waist (plus hips for women) in cm.
  3. For the BMI method, enter your height, weight, and age.
  4. Check your estimated body fat percentage and rating (essential fat, athlete, good, average, obese).

FAQ

How do I take measurements for the U.S. Navy method?
Measure the narrowest part of the neck just below the larynx; the waist at the navel for men and at the narrowest part for women; and the hips at the most protruding point, horizontally with a tape and entered in cm. The waist must be larger than the neck for the calculation to work.
Which of the two methods is more accurate?
The U.S. Navy method, with direct circumference measurements, is usually more accurate. The BMI method (Deurenberg formula) doesn't account for muscle mass, so it has a large margin of error for muscular or skinny-fat body types.
Can I use this instead of a body-composition scan?
It's a formula-based approximation, so treat it as a reference. It can differ from your actual body fat by 3-5 percentage points or more, so measure with body-composition equipment for an accurate value.
